General School Written by Webmaster
Friday, 17 August 2012 12:47

An excerpt from an email set to families with school kids, received from Marianne O'Connor, Superintendent of Schools.

"... We have been notified by the Dept. of Public Health and our local Board of Health that Westborough has been identified as being a high risk community for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). As a precautionary measure, the use of all school , town fields, and playgrounds after sunset is prohibited until further notice.

Signs are posted at each of the schools to remind the community. All playgrounds and athletic fields will be sprayed on Monday 8/20. Additional information can be found on our website."

UPDATE: here are the three "Pesticide Standard Written Notification" document links, copied from the school's website containing information "for schools, day care programs, and school-age childcare programs":

Blown Electical Transformer on Fisher St.

Gibbons Middle School Written by Webmaster
Friday, 17 September 2010 10:01

[received 11:01am 17-Sep-2010; please note the contact invitation is intended for parents of students at Gibbons  - webmaster]

Good Morning,

This is a Connect-Ed message from Jack Foley, Interim Principal of Gibbons Middle School.

Earlier this morning a several teachers heard a loud noise and saw a bright flash of light. We immediately contacted the Westborough Police Department and initiated our preliminary safety response protocols. WPD quickly responded, investigating both the trails behind the school and the utility poles adjacent to the school. Fortunately, National Grid was in the area and confirmed that a squirrel was responsible for the blown fuse on the utility pole at the intersection of Gary Circle and Fisher St. I am pleased to report that this incident did not interrupt classes or instructional time.

Should you have any questions regarding this incident please contact me directly at Gibbons Middle School at 508-836-7740.

John E. Foley
Interim Principal
Gibbons Middle School

Education Board adopts Common Core standards to keep Massachusetts students national leaders in education

General School Written by Webmaster
Friday, 23 July 2010 00:04

MALDEN - July 21, 2010 - The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education cited the increased academic rigor and stronger expectations for student performance when it voted 8-0 to adopt the Common Core Standards in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics on Wednesday, making Massachusetts the 27th state to adopt the internationally benchmarked academic standards that promise to keep the Commonwealth's students national leaders in education. The Common Core Standards will continue to be assessed through the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), ensuring that all Massachusetts students continue to achieve at the highest levels in the nation and preparing them to succeed in the global economy.

Launched in June 2009, the Common Core State Standards Initiative is designed to develop and implement a single set of national standards in ELA and math to define what every student should know and be able to do in order to be fully ready for post-secondary education or a successful career. Massachusetts played a leading role in the development and review of the standards over the past 13 months. Curriculum experts and educators from across the Commonwealth reviewed and submitted comments on drafts that were incorporated throughout the development process to ensure that the expectations set in the final versions met or exceeded the state's strong standards for students.
