o Woburn-based BioVex Raises $30 Million More in Venture Capital

Woburn, Mass. – BioVex, a Woburn-based developer of technology for the treatment and prevention of cancer and infectious disease, announced on Tuesday that it has raised $30 million more in venture capital, in addition to the $40 million the company announced in March. The latest investment was co-led by Morningside Venture, Ventech and MVM Life Science Partners, who were joined by other new investors including Sectoral Asset Management and Ysios Capital Partners. The proceeds of the financing will primarily be used to complete the ongoing Phase III pivotal study of the company’s OncoVEX compound for the treatment of melanoma and to fund pre-commercialization activities.

Boston -- PureTech Ventures, a Boston-based venture capital firm, announced that John LaMattina, the former president of Pfizer global research & development, has joined the firm as a senior partner. PureTech also announced it has promoted Eric Elenko and Steve Muniz to partner positions. Elenko joined PureTech in 2005. Muniz joined the firm in 2007. PureTech focuses on healthcare and pharmaceutical business investments.

o Woburn-based BioTrove to be Acquired by Life Technologies Corp.

Woburn, Mass. -- Life Technologies Corp., a Nasdaq-listed provider life science products, has signed an agreement to acquire BioTrove, a Woburn-based drug discovery company, for an undisclosed amount. BioTrove is backed by venture capitalist firms Catalyst Health and Technology Partners, CB Health Ventures, Vox Equity Partners, Echelon Ventures and Fletcher Spaght. The acquisition builds on a collaboration that Life Technologies entered into with BioTrove in 2007. Following the acquisition, BioTrove will form a subsidiary named BIOCIUS Life Sciences to hold the assets of its RapidFire business unit, which will be spun-out as an independent operating company.

o Clearwire Raises Another $1.6 Billion, Led by Sprint Nextel

Kirkland, Wash. -- Giving it more ammunition to roll out its high-speed wireless (WiMax) network in more cities across the U.S. Kirkland, Wash.-based Clearwire said on Tuesday that it has raised another $1.6 billion, including a $1.2 billion investment from partner Sprint Nextel. Time Warner Cable, Intel, Eagle River Holdings and Bright House Networks also participated. Noticeably absent from the list is Google, which played a major role in the company's $3.2 billion funding last year. Sprint Nextel, which has major operations in Reston, owns a majority stake in Clearwire, and has rolled out the company's high-speed service, branded as Sprint 4G, in several of its markets.

o Boston-based First Wind Completes Wind Power Project in Utah

Boston -- First Wind, a Boston-based wind power company, on Tuesday announced the completion of the first phase of its Milford Wind Corridor project, which is planned to generate 203.5 MW of clean energy, making it the largest renewable energy facility in Utah. Featuring 97 total wind turbines, the first phase of the project has the capacity to power about 45,000 homes per year. The Milford Wind Corridor is the first wind energy facility permitted under the Bureau of Land Management’s Wind Energy Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for Western U.S. states.
